Facts related to "Shu"
I am reading a very well researched book called "Snow flower and the Secret Fan". It is set in early 19th century rural China and features a 'secret' women's written language - the only one in recorded history. The story in the book also covers the process of foot binding in order satisfy the beauty ideals of the day. I was suprised to learn that it was not only the elite who followed this practice, but that most women endured foot binding and the ones that did not were not even considered suitable for marriage. They were alternately called 'big footed girls' and 'little daughters in law' - which is much a more complimentary sounding euphimism than I expected for a house slave, who was also a sex slave available to any man of the household and with no status at all. How miserable those little daughters in law must have been.
