We do our best to filter out the cruft, but there are always gonna be inappropriate posts that slip past us. Sending a mod message with a brief explanation of what's wrong with a post will help to get it removed quickly (this is preferred over simply clicking the report button since it can be hard to tell why something was reported).
We occasionally come across complaints about a decline in the quality of posts on TIL, yet very few people actually report submissions (typically no more than two or three per week). If you want TIL to remain a high quality subreddit, then we really need your assistance.
A few other issues and reminders:
Please read the rules in the sidebar before posting. It takes a lot of time for the mods to approve submissions and most that we come across aren't even appropriate for TIL.
Post titles must concisely state whatever fact you learned (links are for references and elaboration, not everyone will click them), and must be clear and in no way potentially misleading. Be aware of this when posting about something that's controversial.
Remember that no news or links to recent news articles are allowed. There are better subreddits for those and we don't want to be constantly bombarded with duplicate stories.
If a fact pertains only to the US, be sure to note that in your post title (this was recently suggested by a reader).
Sites that are nothing more than a collection of un-sourced facts are not appropriate references.
Failure to do so may result in its removal. Also please take note of the other rules in the sidebar.
