Ok, I lied, I learned this a few years ago. However I wanted to start a thread where everyone shared one incredible fact they learned from school, something that they will never forget, but also something that has no real practical value in your career. Let me explain mine, and maybe it will make better sense.
Squid travel in packs (schools?) and at night, when the moon is bright this creates a dark patch or shadow in the water. Sharks and whales looking up at the surface see this dark patch and know that means a big meal of squid. So the squid evolved special organs to help prevent this problem. Before night falls, a special species of bacteria fill these organs. These bacteria are Vibrio fischeri and have the ability to produce light. So at night, these squid glow brightly and the predators below can't tell the difference between moonlight and squidlight. In the morning, the squids expel these bacteria as they are no longer needed.
