The Lewis & Clark expedition only suffered one casualty. Dysentery, snake bites, a dislocated shoulder, venereal disease and Lewis being shot in the buttocks after being mistaken for an elk all threatened the group's well-being, but the only man to die did so as a result of a burst appendix. history.com/news/10-littl…

Researchers deduce that the appendix is designed to protect good bacteria in the gut. That way, when the gut is affected by a bout of diarrhea or other illness that cleans out the intestines, the good bacteria in the appendix can repopulate the digestive system and keep you healthy. webmd.com/digestive-disor…

The appendix is not useless. Based on known facts, researchers asserted in 2007 that it stores beneficial bacteria to repopulate the body should it be purged of that bacteria by illness. An experiment then showed the disease C-diff to reoccur 4x more often in those without an appendix. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App…
The once-thought useless human appendix has evolved at least 29 times, and been lost a maximum of 12 times--but evolution keeps bringing it back, possibly due to it having an important role in immune function. sciencealert.com/your-app…

The appendix may not just be vestigial in humans; a 2007 study suggested that appendices serve as safe havens for "good bacteria" when illness flushes other bacteria from the intestines. Afterward, the useful bacteria can quickly repopulate the intestines. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App…

Today I learned of Vestigial Structures/Features, which are near or fully obsolete remnants of physical, behavioral, or biochemical traits that for the most part were weeded out by the evolutionary process. Leonid Rogozov, a Soviet surgeon, removed his own appendix while stationed in Antarctica.

In 1961 Leonid Rogozov was stationed at the Novolazarevskaya Camp in Antarctica. He was the only doctor in a group of 13 researchers stationed there from 1960 to 1962. During this time he diagnosed himself with peritonitis and concluded his appendix must be removed. At this time he was the only doctor in 1000 miles of the camp, an weather and lack of aircraft prevented the possibility of any other doctors being able to reach Rogozov in time. So using local anaesthesia, he removed his own appendix. Some other workers from the camp assisted him by holding mirrors and instruments, but the entire surgery was performed by Rogozov himself. The operation was a success and he recovered fully.

EDIT: Here's a link to my sources, since I apparently failed at that the first time around. http://englishrussia.com/2009/12/21/leonid-rogozov-%E2%80%93-a-hero-surgeon/ http://www.bmj.com/content/339/bmj.b4965.full
